- Introducing Local Haida Gwaii Crystal Cabin Gallery Owner
Meet April Dutheil and learn about her passion for promoting local artists and her early years at Haida Gwaii Safaris. My name is April Dutheil and I’m the owner and operator of Crystal Cabin Gallery, an art and jewelry gallery on Haida Gwaii. Founded in 1984 by my parents, Dutes and Laura, I took over the family business in 2018. Our mission is to amplify the voices of contemporary Indigenous artists, from Haida Gwaii to the world, with respect and integrity. Born and raised on Haida Gwaii, one of my earliest jobs was working for Valerie at Haida Gwaii Safaris. I was going into my second year at the University of British Columbia, and I was looking for my first summer job outside of our family business. I ended up finding work in Sandspit and worked the day and evening shift at the Sandspit Inn, and later in the summer found work with Valerie working the morning shift at her business. As a first opportunity to prove myself, to what I considered “a real job” outside of my parent’s business, I was delighted that Valerie had put her trust in me. I was staying with my elementary school teachers for the summer and would ride my bike over to start in the wee hours of the morning. Seventeen years later Valerie has continued to support me, and I’ve been able to welcome hundreds of her guests to our Gallery in Tlell. As a business based on values and relationships, I am grateful for Valerie’s love and care over the years. She is a champion for running a business with heart, and an inspiration. On your next trip to Haida Gwaii Safaris, we’d love to welcome you to our Gallery and make your trip to Haida Gwaii memorable. You can also view our collection online at crystalcabingallery.com and speak with the Haida Gwaii Safaris team about scheduling a visit. About Crystal Cabin Gallery Founded in 1984, Crystal Cabin Gallery began as a modest shop showcasing their handcrafted jewelry and art. Over the years, it has evolved into a renowned gallery featuring an extensive collection of Haida and Northwest Coast Indigenous art, including original paintings, carvings, and jewelry. Committed to supporting local artisans, we collaborate with over 30 Indigenous artists to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the region. Nestled amidst the natural beauty of Haida Gwaii, Crystal Cabin Gallery continues to be a destination for those seeking authentic Indigenous art and unique geological treasures. - David’s Haida Gwaii Safaris Story: Fishing, Friends & Family
Meet David, an efficiency manager and passionate angler from Prescott, Arizona, whose solo fishing adventure to Haida Gwaii Safaris became one of the most memorable trips of his life. “I first met Valerie about fifteen years ago at the Fred Hall Show,” David recalls. “Shopping for outfitters back then, mostly comparing prices. I never imagined that conversation would lead to one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” From Sitka to Haida Gwaii — A Journey Years in the Making After years of fishing across North America—including Sitka, Alaska, and Cedros Island, Mexico—David had heard countless recommendations about Haida Gwaii from Sergio of Angler Chronicles. When his usual lodge in Sitka turned away single anglers, David reached out to Valerie’s team. “The moment I called, the entire team made me feel welcome. They didn’t hesitate—they found me a prime July date and paired me with three other anglers. It ended up being the perfect fit.” Fishing, Friendship, and Fine Food What stood out most to David wasn’t just the fishing—it was the people. “From the second I landed, Valerie met me at the airport with a hug. That personal touch set the tone. The drive to the lodge was breathtaking, and every detail after that felt intentional.” From daily fresh soups and breads to curated drinks and chef-quality meals, David says the lodge experience was “five stars without being formal.” The nautical décor, panoramic ocean views, and cozy spaces made him feel like part of a close-knit family rather than a guest. “By the end of the first night, I wasn’t a solo traveler anymore,” he shares. “I was sitting around the fire, swapping stories and laughing with new friends from across Canada and the U.S.” Crafting Memories That Last When David isn’t on the water, he spends time woodworking with alligator juniper from his property in Prescott. Inspired by his stay, he created handcrafted gifts for the Haida Gwaii Safaris crew—a set of coasters for Valerie, a carved salmon skeleton coaster for Captain Nathan, and Grand Slam of each species for the top anglers in Nathan’s boat. “The lodge experience moved me to create something lasting,” David says. “It’s how I say thank you.” The People Who Make It Special One of the strongest connections David made was with Captain Nathan, whose warmth and humor stood out. “He’s the most personable guide I’ve ever fished with,” David says. “Nathan and the team made sure everyone caught fish—and had a blast doing it.” Even at the end of his stay, the hospitality continued. “Aubrey and the staff were with us at the airport, making sure every cooler of fish got safely packed. That level of care says everything about who they are.” More Than a Fishing Trip What began as an uncertain solo adventure turned into something far more meaningful. “I came for the fishing,” David says, smiling, “but I left with friendships and memories that’ll last a lifetime.” At Haida Gwaii Safaris, every guest becomes part of the story—just like David. From world-class salmon and halibut fishing to the warm, family-style hospitality, it’s no surprise that anglers keep returning year after year. 📍 Ready to Write Your Own Haida Gwaii Story? - Let’s Talk Hook-Up: Pete Gray’s 2025 Trip Recap at Haida Gwaii Safaris
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Pete Gray and the Let’s Talk Hook Up crew for joining us this season and for sharing such a thoughtful recap of their experience at Haida Gwaii Safaris. Pete’s words capture the heart of what we strive to provide each guest—authentic adventure, exceptional service, and unforgettable memories. Here’s his recap of their trip with us: Let’s Talk Hook-Up: 2025 Trip Recap By Pete Gray — Let’s Talk Hook-Up Radio Valerie Hoperich is an amazing person. She owns Haida Gwaii Safaris, formerly known as Queen Charlotte Safaris. Valerie decided to change the name to honor the First Nation people of Canada and the incredible island archipelago. Though the name has changed, the unforgettable experience she delivers has not. Valerie has been at it for over 20 years, and it’s not an easy job. She runs a fishing fleet, a hotel, a restaurant, a transport service, and a whole lot more. Valerie does it all with a smile and incredible support from her staff. We had two trips this year, the first hosted by Cory Sanden and the second hosted by Harold Davis and me. Both trips were fantastic, but I’ll report on ours. Getting to Haida Gwaii Safaris It’s super easy to get to Haida Gwaii Safaris. You fly into Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, then take a 1.5-hour flight to Sandspit. Valerie and her team pick you up at the small airport, and within five minutes of boarding the shuttle, you’re at the lodge. We checked into our super-comfortable rooms and prepared for the next day’s fishing. All you need to bring is layered clothing—the lodge supplies rain gear, boots, and fishing tackle. Being the fishing geek I am, I brought my own AFTCO rain gear, a couple of rods and reels, some of Cory’s MC Swimbaits Slugs, and a few Shimano Butterfly Jigs. Day 1: Incredible Bottom Fishing and a Strong Start Our first day brought fantastic weather. Our boat, with Captain Nathan at the helm, joined most of the other lodge boats for the 15-mile run south to The Pinnacles. After a scenic cruise between the two Haida Gwaii islands from the east side to the west, we arrived at the spot and dropped our plastic baits to the bottom—about 100 to 150 feet deep. We were immediately hammered by lingcod and rockfish. Within an hour, we had our daily limit of lingcod (three per angler), all 20–40+ pounds. I brought along one of the Shimano Ocea Jigger 25LD reels loaded with 65-pound PowerPro Max Quatro, and I was totally impressed with the power this super-light reel delivers—no need for a two-speed! We then moved a couple of miles inside to one of Nathan’s halibut hot spots, and within 15 minutes we had our halibut limit. After that, we switched to salmon fishing and caught a few nice kings and silvers, though not quite our daily limit. That was fine, we still had two more days to go. Day 2: Salmon, Rain, and a Crab Feast Day 2 brought lots of rain in Sandspit, but by the time we reached the west side of the island, it was intermittent and we stayed mostly dry. We headed north and concentrated on salmon. We caught enough kings to fulfill half our limit, several silvers, more lingcod, and a few rockfish. Most of the other boats did even better, absolutely slaying the salmon—with several big kings up to 30 pounds! On the way out, we dropped a crab pot and checked it on the way back. It was loaded with Dungeness crab, which made for an amazing appetizer before dinner. Day 3: Kings, Lingcod, and a Surprise Halibut Day 3 brought some wind that kept us fishing in the prime salmon area called The Wall, where we were mostly sheltered from the weather. We nailed the rest of our king salmon limit and picked up a few more silvers. With about an hour of fishing time left, we ventured a couple of miles off the point in calmer weather to one of Nathan’s secret spots. Within 15 minutes, we’d filled our limit of lingcod—and Bruce even caught and released a 100-pound halibut he hooked on a swimbait! Why Haida Gwaii Safaris Leaves a Lasting Impression Haida Gwaii Safaris is truly a special place. The natural beauty of the islands, the wildlife, and the incredible fishing are unmatched. The food is five-star, and the hospitality of the lodge staff is amazing. The harvest you bring back is also fantastic. All packages include processing your catch, vacuum-packing, and boxing it to take home on the plane. My harvest for three days of fishing was two boxes—90 pounds of fillets! One of the impressive things about Haida Gwaii Safaris is how many couples it attracts. Of the 24 people we had, 18 were couples, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Many of those guests re-booked for next year, so if you want to join us next August, visit qcsafaris.com and book your spot now! 🎣 Ready to plan your own 2026 Haida Gwaii adventure? - Chinook vs Coho Salmon
At Haida Gwaii Safaris, we offer unforgettable fishing adventures, including chances to catch top salmon species like Chinook and Coho.Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, knowing the difference between these two salmon can improve your success. In this guide, we’ll break down the key traits of each species to help you identify and target them on your next trip to the stunning waters of Haida Gwaii. Chinook vs. Coho Salmon: Key Differences Physical Characteristics of Chinook vs. Coho Salmon Size and Weight Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are the largest Pacific salmon species. They typically weigh between 25 to 30 pounds, with some growing over 50 pounds, making them a prized catch for sport fishers.Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are smaller, averaging 12 to 15 pounds, but can reach up to 20 pounds. Their lighter weight makes them ideal for anglers seeking a more active and fast-paced fishing experience. Coloration During spawning season, Chinook males develop a hooked jaw, sharp teeth, and turn maroon or dark olive-brown.Coho males, in contrast, display a bright red body with a dark head, making them easier to identify during the spawning run. Tail Fin and Anal Fin Features One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is by looking at the anal fin rays.Coho salmon have longer rays that extend over two-thirds of the fin’s base.Chinook salmon also have long anal fin rays, but they do not exceed two-thirds of the base.Additionally, running your fingernail along the tail fin rays can help: Coho: You’ll feel distinct bone segments. Chinook: The rays feel smooth with no bony ridges. Gum Line Color Check the gum line inside the mouth for a quick ID: Chinook salmon have a dark, black, or graphite-colored gum line. Coho salmon show a light gray or white gum line. For a visual guide on distinguishing between Chinook and Coho salmon, you might find this video helpful: Fish ID Lesson: Chinook vs. Coho Habitat and Behavior of Chinook vs. Coho Salmon Both Chinook and Coho salmon are anadromous fish, meaning they spend most of their adult lives in the ocean and return to freshwater rivers to spawn. While they share this life cycle, their habitats and behavior differ in a few key ways. Chinook Salmon Habitat Chinook salmon prefer large river systems and are commonly found in major rivers and deep lakes along the Pacific Coast. They are strong migrators, known to travel long distances and inhabit deeper ocean waters, which allows them to grow to their impressive size. Coho Salmon Habitat Coho salmon also live in coastal waters, but they are more commonly found in smaller rivers, streams, and tributaries. These fish are known for their strong swimming ability and aggressive behavior when hooked—qualities that provide a more action-packed fishing experience for anglers. Fishing Considerations When fishing for Chinook or Coho salmon, understanding their behavior is key to a successful catch. Chinook salmon are known for their large size and strength. They require patience, skill, and the right technique to reel in, making them ideal for anglers looking for a serious challenge. Coho salmon, on the other hand, are smaller but incredibly energetic. They’re famous for their acrobatic jumps and fast runs, offering a fun, action-packed experience—especially for those who enjoy a more dynamic fight. To catch either species, it’s important to fish in the right location at the right time: Chinooks are usually found in deep waters and large river systems. Cohos tend to stay in shallower waters and smaller streams. Fishing techniques may vary depending on the species and setting. At Haida Gwaii Safaris, our expert guides will equip you with the proper gear, timing, and strategy to successfully target both Chinook and Coho salmon. - Exploring Pacific Halibut Fishing with Haida Gwaii Safaris
Looking for the ultimate Pacific halibut fishing experience? Haida Gwaii Safaris offers world-class opportunities to catch one of the most coveted fish in the Pacific Ocean: the Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis). Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, fishing for halibut in the pristine waters of Haida Gwaii is an adventure you won’t forget. In this blog post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Pacific halibut fishing, including key facts about these incredible fish, the best fishing techniques, and why Haida Gwaii Safaris is the best choice for your next fishing trip. What is a Pacific Halibut? The Pacific halibut is a massive flatfish species found in the North Pacific and Bering Sea. Known for their impressive size, these fish can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh over 500 pounds. However, most anglers target halibut between 20-60 pounds, which provide both an exciting fight and excellent table fare. Physical Appearance: Pacific halibut have a unique, flat body that helps them blend seamlessly into the ocean floor. They are typically dark brown or olive on their top side and pale white on the underside. Habitat: Halibut are bottom-dwelling fish, typically found at depths of 100 to 300 feet in cold, nutrient-rich waters. Their ability to stay near the seafloor makes them accessible for anglers using bottom fishing techniques. Why Haida Gwaii is a Premier Destination for Halibut Fishing Haida Gwaii, located off the coast of British Columbia, is one of the best places in the world to fish for Pacific halibut. The cold, nutrient-rich waters surrounding this archipelago create the perfect habitat for these massive fish. Here’s why Haida Gwaii is the ideal location for halibut fishing: Abundant Halibut Population: The waters of Haida Gwaii are teeming with Pacific halibut. These rich fishing grounds attract anglers from around the world looking to catch these trophy fish. Breathtaking Scenery: Haida Gwaii is known for its natural beauty, offering stunning ocean views, dense forests, and rugged coastline. When you fish here, you’re not only pursuing halibut—you’re immersed in one of the most pristine environments on Earth. Optimal Fishing Seasons: The best time to fish for halibut in Haida Gwaii is from April to September. During this period, halibut are actively feeding, making it the perfect time for a successful fishing trip. Pacific Halibut Fishing Techniques Fishing for halibut requires specific techniques, equipment, and knowledge. Here’s a quick overview of the best methods to catch Pacific halibut: Bottom Fishing: Since halibut are bottom-dwellers, bottom fishing is the most effective method. This technique involves dropping baited hooks to the seafloor, where halibut are feeding. You’ll need strong rods and heavy-duty reels to handle these large fish. Live Baiting: Halibut are attracted to live bait, such as herring, squid, or other fish. The movement of the bait makes it more enticing to halibut, increasing your chances of getting a bite. Trolling: While bottom fishing is the most common technique, trolling can also be effective. This involves dragging bait along the seafloor while the boat moves slowly, covering more ground to find active halibut. Sonar Technology: Using sonar and fish finders, our expert guides can help you pinpoint the most productive fishing spots, ensuring you’re fishing in the right areas where halibut are most abundant. The Thrill of Halibut Fishing Catching a Pacific halibut is no small feat. These fish put up an incredible fight, using their size and strength to resist capture. The battle can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the fish. Once you reel in your halibut, you’ll experience the thrill of landing one of the ocean’s largest and most powerful fish. Why Choose Haida Gwaii Safaris for Your Fishing Adventure? - Haida Gwaii: Reclaiming Identity and Reviving Culture in the Islands of the People
In the heart of the Northern British Columbia Coast, a profound journey of reclamation and cultural revival has been unfolding. The Haida Nation, with its rich heritage and deep connection to the land and sea, has been at the forefront of this transformation. This story begins in 1787, when Captain George Dixon surveyed the islands. He named the islands the Queen Charlotte Islands after his ship, the Queen Charlotte, which was named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of the United Kingdom. In 2010, the Haida restored the name Haida Gwaii, which translates to “Islands of the People.” Haida held a ceremony to respectfully return the name Queen Charlotte. Since then, an incredible transformation has taken place. The Haida reveals to the island communities and the world an ancient living culture through art, language, and place names. These all celebrate an intimacy with the lands and seas and reveal a depth of knowledge of this place collected over millennia. Queen Charlotte Safaris is making a transition to Haida Gwaii Safaris to properly celebrate and acknowledge the people and Haida title. Honoring the lands and seas in this way, through place names, brings us closer and will continue to inspire our safaris to be the trip of a lifetime. We aim to create deeper connections to one another and this beautiful place, Haida Gwaii. Haawa, (Thank you) for being a part of this transition with us! -Valerie and Haida Gwaii Safaris Team

“The service at the lodge and the hands-on friendliness of owner Valerie Hoperich. Valerie has been doing this for years and she brings a welcoming touch to the lodge that was not lost on many of the guests there. Little things like a warm bowl of homemade soup waiting for you when you came in off the boat were a huge hit.” -Shawn Arnold Shawn Arnold of Fish Taco Chronicles has been great friends with Valerie and her family for over 20 years. Last season, he brought up eight friends from Orange County with him to catch the early bird fishing in June. Shawn wrote an article about his adventures in Sandspit that came out Fall 2022. This article features stories about his experience catching halibut as well as his favorite features provided by our lodge. - Haida Gwaii’s Eerie Fish
Whether it is a monster green Lingcod or ghostly Rat Fish, Haida Gwaii has plenty of spooktacular eerie fish in the water that are a blast to catch and eat! Did you know that the maximum age for some species of Rockfish is 115 years old? Rockfish are slow growing and cannot start to reproduce until they are 15-20 years old. British Columbia Rockfish come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. These striped, spiky, and spiny creatures are favorites for anglers and naturalists! The spotted Rat Fish is related to sharks, has a skeleton made completely of cartilage, and has a venomous spine. Rat fish usually live in deeper waters but have been spotted near the shores of Haida Gwaii. Scuba divers claim that they are beautiful to see underwater at night because they glow. Because of this cool feature and their close relation to sharks, they are also known as “Ghost Sharks.” Rat fish have been around for a very long time. In fact, the oldest fossil found of this fish was dated to about 280 million years ago! Sharks in the dogfish family are so named because fishermen have observed these species chasing down smaller fish in dog-like packs. The Spiny Dogfish, also known as the “Mud Shark”, is one of the most abundant species of dogfish and can be found all over the world including Haida Gwaii. They can grow to 130 cm and can live to be 80 years old! Dogfish have five gills on each side of their heads, but do not have gill covers like bony fish. Although they may be fun to catch, they are a protected species and must be released. Have you ever looked inside a Lingcod fish mouth? If you did, you might be shocked to see the rows and rows of needle-sharp teeth. Lingcod have over 500 teeth and grow and lose up to 20 teeth a day! All these teeth aid these predators in hunting and eating their prey. In July of 2019 Dennis Smith landed two green Lingcod! It is a rarity to land these Lings, especially two in one day! The cause of this rare greenish-blue color is due to bile pigment called biliverdin, which turns the blood serum that freakishly odd color. But don’t worry, the meat of these ghoulish critters cook and taste the same as a typically colored Lingcod! Whether it’s the spooky months or the middle of Summer, there are plenty of creepy crawly fish that would be sure to give you a fright if you caught one! Join us for the catch of a lifetime!
